Bobby Carpenter, Denna Laing

Bobby Carpenter and Denna Laing played hockey in different eras. Carpenter, a former NHL All-Star, played for the Capitals, Rangers, Kings, Bruins and Devils from 1981-1999. Denna Laing, a former captain at Princeton, competed professionally in the CWHL and NWHL from 2014-2016.

On Monday, they were teammates at the Boston Marathon. In the 2016 Outdoor Women's Classic, Laing, then with the Boston Pride, went headfirst into the boards and suffered a severe spinal-cord injury. Laing has been in a wheelchair ever since.

Although Laing's hockey career is over, she just did something most of her former teammates have never done: complete a marathon. With Carpenter pushing, the duo clocked in at 4:32:30.

Carpenter had played against Denna's father, Dennis, while the two were youths in suburban Boston. Racing with Denna connected the generations. Carpenter and Laing ran the race for Journey Forward, an organization dedicated to bettering the lives of those with spinal-cord injuries. Laing trains at the non-profit, which is located in Canton, Massachusetts.

Local Boston celebrities, Carpenter and Laing were a notable attraction on this Patriots' Day.

"My voice is gone because I said hello to everybody in the crowd," Laing told CBS Boston. "I felt like everybody was screaming my name. It was so awesome."

This was Carpenter's second marathon. He finished Boston in 3:46:53 in 2016.
