Oregon WR Devon Allen Will Compete At Olympics

Oregon wide receiver Devon Allen will have to hop over a series of barriers to suit up for the Ducks' season opener on Sept. 3. Lucky for Allen, that is what he does best.

The 21-year-old redshirt junior won the 110-meter hurdles at the U.S. Olympic Trials Saturday at his home track in Eugene. His time of 13:03, a personal best, would have won silver in London. The victory was Allen's second U.S. Championship, his first coming in 2014 at the U.S. Outdoor Championships.

Allen's football and track career were both jeopardized when he suffered an ACL tear during Oregon's Jan. 1, 2015 Rose Bowl win over Florida State. Allen missed the 2015 track season and played limited snaps last fall for the Ducks. The Phoenix native had 41 receptions for 684 yards and seven touchdowns in 2014, but he recorded just nine receptions for 94 yards and zero touchdowns in 2015.

Based on his performance on the track, the Ducks can assume Allen is feeling healthy right about now. The world is about to witness his speed and agility.

Back in Eugene, fans care most about whether or not Allen can produce for a team that opens every season with national championship aspirations. For obvious reasons, Allen will miss much of training camp to be in Rio. Even when he comes back, Allen's body will be built more for hurdling than hot routes.

"I've got to get 10 practices in before the first game, so we'll see," Allen tells goducks.com. He and his family have laid out a plan that should have Allen in full football form by the Ducks' second game. In that case, Allen would miss a cupcake opener against UC Davis before rejoining the team for a primetime ESPN battle with Virginia.

Come September, the only thing weighing Allen down may be the gold medal around his neck.
