Jose Luis Sanchez lost his left leg when he stepped on an IED in Afghanistan in 2011. The staff sergeant in the Marines received a "blade runner" prosthetic and began running marathons in 2015. He finished the Boston Marathon last year in 5 hours, 33 minutes and 49 seconds.
His Boston time this year was more than 12 minutes slower -- but there is a great explanation for that:
Sanchez ran the 26.2 miles Monday while carrying an American flag.
Sanchez was running to help the Semper Fi Fund, which provides "immediate financial assistance and lifetime support to post-9/11 wounded, critically ill and injured members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, and their families."
